Before Nirvana: 11 Great Alternative Rock Albums from the Late 1980s

A lot of great rock and roll music in the 1980s didn't sell, and many of the best artists reaped neither fortune nor fame. Many music-heads refer to that decade as the college radio era, or the indie rock era. It spans the peak years of Camper Van Beethoven, the Smiths, Cocteau Twins and other bands that became big names only later, if at all.
In earlier articles, I surveyed some standout albums of the New Wave years (1978-1982) and college radio era (1983-86). This time, I'll cover 11 great records from pre-Nirvana years, 1987 to 1990.
